Point clouds are accessible to anyone using free software.
A simple way to access point cloud without using specialized software is to download and use easy-to-access free software. In this example, we will take a look at Trimble Connect. A simple and yet powerful tool that allows you to interrogate the cloud, compare it with 3D models, and do basic clash detections.
Create a new project
To visualize a point cloud in Trimble Connect, start by creating a new project.
If you have a license, you can share the file with your team.
When you use the free version, don't upload the project to the server, to continue working.
Import a point cloud
Once in the project, navigate to the right menu and click on the Point Cloud menu tab.
Use the Add button to load a new cloud.
Be aware that loading the cloud may take a while, depending on the file size.
Cut section planes
Once the point cloud is loaded, it is possible to cut section planes to see through the cloud.
By using this tool, it is possible to isolate elements and only display part of the cloud.
Take measurements, point coordinates and sketch
It is now possible to take measurements and point coordinates directly on the cloud.
It is also possible to sketch on the cloud.
Place annotations and text depending on project necessity.
Store and view working images
Another available feature is the ability to store views that can be accessed at a later stage
When a view is ready to be stored, click the plus button on the bottom panel.
Rename the view and continue working on the cloud.
To access the stored view, double-click on the image in the bottom panel.
The program will automatically restore the view, measurements, and mak-ups to continue working.
These are a few simple tools that can help improve project development.
